I'm glad another man can cook, my husband is a good cook and so was all my family's husbands. If your man can't cook, then he would have to make himself a sandwich.
Lol! It's so good to hear there is another husband who is a good keeper! They are such a blessing!
The last time I made vanilla I used food grade glycerine. What's your thoughts on that. It doesn't have that wonderful smell. We are an alcohol free family so I'm having a hard time deciding what to do. Love from Missouri
I have never tried using glycerine, but I understand that not using alcohol is important to many. We only use the vanilla in baked goods. The alcohol gets cooked off during the baking process. However, if you are using it to make ice cream or yogurt, the alcohol will still be present.
had my vanilla extract made with vodka over a year but still a vodka smell why
Perhaps there are not enough vanilla beans? Grade A beans are plumper and contain more moisture content than grade B. I'm not sure what grade you used. Maybe try adding a couple more beans? Or you can add up to a tablespoon of cane sugar per pint of extract, or two tablespoons per quart, to help soften the alcohol smell. I hope this helps. ❤️
Here's a question. I bought some vanilla beans online and a couple of them had a whitish substance on part of them. Is this normal?
The whitish substance on vanilla beans could be vanillin crystals or mold. Vanillin crystals are small, white, and transparent crystals that can form on vanilla beans when they have a lower moisture content. The crystals can look like tiny white needles, rain droplets, or glass-like diamonds. They are a sign that the vanilla beans were well-cultivated and cured, and that the vanillin, a flavor compound that contributes to the bean's aroma and taste, has migrated to the outside of the pod as it dries out. Vanillin crystals are safe to eat and can make vanilla have a more concentrated flavor. Mold can also appear on vanilla beans as a white, powdery substance that doesn't glitter. Mold can be difficult to distinguish from other imperfections on the bean, but it usually has a musty, wet smell and can be yellow, green, white, or black in color. I hope this helps. 🙏
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome Thank you! I did remove the parts that were questionable to me. And the beans didn't smell bad, in fact they smelled good! So I went ahead and started my vanilla. This was 13 months ago. When I heard about possible mold on vanilla beans, I got a little paranoid, but now I think I was just seeing crystals. I decanted my vanilla today and it tastes and smells delicious!
YAY!!
Timing is so funny. I started a batch of vanilla today. I used vodka but the others sound good too. I lucked out when I found a bottle for $6. Love it!!! Real vanilla smells so good. If I find some cut little bottles, some times I give vanilla as Christmas gifts to those who I know appreciate it. Lol.
Oh, wow! What a great price! This does make a most wonderful gift! Be blessed!
Hi Julie. Ive been making homemade vanilla extract for about 3 years. I use Vodka. I have given it away for Christmas, and i use it for my baking. Thank you for making this video.
That's wonderful! It's so much more flavorful!
I made vanilla extract for the first time back in December. It's really starting to smell good!
😃❤️
I have made my own before, the biggest problem I have is remembering a year ahead! I forget and then run out! I am going to order some beans right now and get it done this week. I bought a 16 oz bottle of it at Costco for 11.99, (only ingredients are vanilla beans and alcohol) which is way cheaper than the grocery. Great tips! I might do a batch of half bourbon and half vodka. Thanks!! Have a great week! Do you think I can just put in about 12 beans in the alcohol bottle? That way it’s all in one? I always decanted it.
I think that will be great! ❤️
I'm just gathering supplies to start making my own vanilla. I don't use a lot but I would like to have some made up and ready. I put it off a long time. I've just got to decide on my jars now. Ty Julie. I pray your up coming week is amazing!
Thank you! Good luck!
I can’t remember the last time I bought vanilla, I’ve been making it so long. I’ve tried other liquor but tend to make more with vodka, maybe because it’s cheaper? Lol. I think it lasts longer also than store bought because I don’t add as much. Have a blessed day ❤️
Thank you! Blessings!
We love making our own vanilla. We use vodka to make it. It tastes so good and is so much cheaper. We use it to make cookies, in yogurt, in rice pudding, in French toast, the list goes on and on.
Yum!! ❤️
I was and am proud to be a 'home maker'. What is more important than creating a home for your family. I have 54 years of experience! :)
I absolutely agree! ❤️
This first rug you show is to cute!
Thank you!
Soup and salad looks delicious and it’s so nice to have mixes that are so clean. Awesome! Val C
Hi Julie, I love chicken soup. It's my favorite. I love making it. Your garden has grown so fast. It looks great! I pray your harvest is huge! Be blessed
Thank you, Carol! Many blessings to you, my sweet friend!
The garden is looking good. I also have a ton of scapes, going to make some pesto and not sure what else. The dogs have been enjoying eating some of the spinach lol
Thank you! Mmm! Pesto! Great idea!
Love soup any time of year!!! It tends to trigger off a hot flash but I don’t care!! lol! I’m going to take a peek at that website, glad they don’t add a whole bunch of salt or unnecessary ingredients!! Thanks❤
I'm with you, Michelle! I love soup! ❤️
Intro music is too long, you lost my interest. I didn’t click on your video to listen to your choice of music.
I'm sorry you feel that way. My channel is meant to be a slow living, relaxing channel. Much of life today is very fast-paced and stressful. If I can give just one person a moment of peace in their life, I have succeeded. I appreciate you taking the time to watch what you did. Many blessings to you!
We quit feeding the birds for a while last summer due to the bears. It was the first year we were able to get hazelnuts off the bush. They are small but delicious. Have only been able to enjoy our grapes a few years. Something eats them when ripe and the last few years they are eaten by something before they are ripe. Enjoy your videos and recipes.
YIKES! We do have a bear that we can hear and smell every once in a while in the woods out back, but we've yet to see it. 👀 I hope we get a few hazelnuts this year and maybe a few grapes. Right now, we are enjoying lots of spinach and Swiss chard! 😃 Have a blessed day!
You're doing good!
Thank you, Gail! 🤗
Beautiful property, I love your arbor! Excellent video!❤
Thank you, Mary!
Love your music❤
Thank you!
I bought brussel sprout starts for the first time this year. I'll have to look up care and tips for growing. Are they best covered like cabbage to discourage the cabbage moth/larvae thing?
We don't seem to have any issues growing our Brussel sprouts like we do with cabbage. We don't usually grow them in the same bed either, but they look so alike that Joe got them mixed up. 🤔 We do plan on covering our cabbage, though. I think you will enjoy growing your Brussel sprouts. They are pretty easy.
@@JulieKeeperofMyHome Thx. I wouldn't mind seeing yours in progress, when to harvest and favorite recipes or preservation style for them in future videos :) Always adding to your work load :)
🤗❤️
A small golf cart would do wonders for you when moving those buckets from one end to other.
🤗😊
I’ve been looking for a recipe for chunky granola! Can’t wait to make this!
It's the best!!
My goodness, Julie! How did I miss that you are making videos again? Great video!
Thank you!
Such a beautiful property with an abundance of wonderful fruits, herbs and vegetables. You are both wonderful caretakers of all God has blessed you with. ❤️🙏🏻Val C
Your homestead is so pretty Julie. Your orchards are beautiful. I can't wait to see your harvest. Do you do your own editing? Your videos are top quality. Ty Julie.
Thank you, Carol! You are very kind. Yes, I do all of my own editing. It's my favorite part of the process! We can't wait for the harvest either!
We need to be as self sufficient as possible! People have always thought o was an odd duck because of all those things I do as well. I like to make juice from the hawthorn berries, the fruit is also good to dehydrate for tea. Love to watch like minded individuals ❤️ Have a blessed day.
You are so right!! This is why the old fashioned skills are so important. We need to share them! Thank you, Sharen! Be blessed! ❤️
Wonderful video! I look at my garden as supplementing because we would starve to death if we had to live on it...I live in mid Arizona and growing things here is not a picnic. Between the altitude, lack of rain and huge swings in temperatures (not uncommon to be 95 in day and 30's at night) there are certain things that work and those that don't. I stopped trying to fight it! That and I am plant hospice and tend to just transition them to Jesus! I did go out this morning and deadheaded my roses and washed them to dry out to make rosehip oil and dried petals for tea and beauty products. I did spy some peppers and some tomato blooms so fingers crossed!! I will always try my best. Thanks for another wonderful catch up with you!
Thank you! I can only imagine the struggle in your area. We are still learning what works and what doesn't. It's a neverending battle. Onions are tough to grow. This year, we have them in the greenhouse. We'll see how that works. I'm glad that, even though you have struggled, you haven't given up. Keep moving forward! Blessings, my friend. ❤️
awesome video where abouts are you ? sebago has gotten to crowded after covid but prices are out of control to move north
Thank you! I appreciate your support by watching! My husband and I live in Aroostook County. You are right! Prices are crazy everywhere. 😔 Have a beautiful week!
Brain dump....Let paper remember so you can forget. It's a wonderful thing that I learned many years ago.
I love how you put it! 😊
